splash away

Author: Jessie | 21/07/2006

When I went pond dipping, catching all the animals made me think about the people who don't look about the way they pond dip who make splashy and messy and disturb animals homes. When I think about these people I think about the way I do it and is it right and when I watch it usually is.

First time we went to the Heart Of Reeds

Author: Ffion H | 07/07/2006

On the first time we went to the Heart of Reads we did pond dipping in a long stream. It was very very muddy. The site didn't have much to do. Now there's lots of stuff to do. The site is a lot better now.

What exactly do you mean by 'the site didn't have much to do?' (Editor)

Using knowledge forum

Author: Guy.s | 07/07/2006

On Wednesday 5th july 2006, Mr parry [who works at the Heart Of Reeds]came in and helped us with knowledge forum [a computer program about the heart of reeds]and interveiwed us with a video camera.

It's tricky, I know Guy, but just for the record, I work as a researcher and my work at the Heart of Reeds is voluntary as Chairman of the Railway Land Local Nature Reserve. Knowledge Forum is software developed in Canada that can be used for ANY topic and it is you and your class that are, in fact, using it in relation to the creatures you found in Heart of Reeds and the questions that you were encouraged to ask about them.

Pond dipping

Author: Alice | 05/07/2006

When we go to the Heart of Reeds we sometimes go pond dipping with the class. I like finding really interesting pond life. Once I found a species that I didn't know so I looked on our species sheet to find out what it was called. It was a Rat tailed maggot. That was the first ever animal I caught. IT WAS GREAT!!!!

Animals you never know how much they understand

Author: Jessie | 05/07/2006

I think the Fish are really inquistive
because you never know how much animals know. If animals have feelings too then they have brains too you never think they know what. For example, if you call a dog stupid in a voice that is mean, a dog might look sad and they might be mean to you but if your nice, they are happy and playful and never mean. As for the fish, if you pond dip violenty you are in more chance of really hurting the fish.

Birds at Heart of Reeds

Author: izaac | 03/07/2006

Dear mr pary how are you what sort of birds do you get at the heart of reeds.
p.s plese reply back from izaac

I can bring a list of the birds we have found on the Railway Land site as a whole and also the survey work of pupils several years ago. I am happy to do a bit of this but the blog is mainly for you to comment to one another on how you think the project is going and especially the Knowledge Forum software and whether you think it helps you think about Science itself in any way.

I will bring the bird information on Wednesday, though. See you then.

When we make and do stuff for the Heart of Reeds I prefer to work in pairs (because) it gives you more ideas and helps you to get your work done quicker because 2 people do it and not just 1.

Do you mean the work on site or the work you do with Knowledge Forum in the classroom? (Editor)

Then we had our lunch and after that we did a bit of dancing - that was fun, of course. The schools and people who took part in the project were Rodmell, Wallands, Priory, Barcombe and some adults with learning disabilities. It went very well.

In and out. out and in

Author: Jessie | 01/07/2006

When we went to the heart of reeds the first time doing this project, and that was on October the 5th, we caught things like baby stickle backs but this time, on 7th June, we caught ordanairy (ordinary) fish and a lot more frogs. I think it is because of the water temprutar (temperature) and the time of year.
